Forget wands. Forget incantations shouted in dead languages.
On Thune, magic is literacy.
When Thune Da — the first Thune — saved her creation from ruin, she didn’t just build a world. She wrote it. The foundation of everything here is runic script: living characters that describe what a thing is and what it’s allowed to become.
Learn to read them, and you can read the world. Learn to write them, and you can edit it.
The Basics
1. Runes are everywhere.

They’re etched into the bedrock of Cinderhold, grown into the kelp of the vine-forests, tattooed on the throats of Undine elders. The three moons themselves are the largest runes ever written — Power, Love, and Truth, each projecting its lens across Thune for eight hours a night. That’s why magic feels different depending on the watch. You’re literally working inside a different sentence.
2. Quantrons are the ink.

If runes are words, quantrons are the physics that lets the words stick to reality. Every rune-smith will tell you: you don’t “cast” a rune, you entangle it. You coax a cluster of quantrons into holding the shape of your intent long enough for the world to agree with you. Strong emotion helps. Clear intent helps more. This is why the Shield Mate’s watch (Love) makes healing easier — the ambient runic field is already inclined toward mending.
3. Runic power grows with use — and with cost.

The more you work with runes, the more fluent you become. Your personal field thickens. Old rangers can light a fire with a glance because they’ve written “warmth” ten thousand times. But fluency has a price. Work too much under Bright Forge (Power) and you’ll become blunt, forceful, tired. Spend too long in the Pale thin places and you’ll start forgetting names, faces — the toll Sarella Oke described. Magic remembers what you spent.
What This Means For You
You don’t need to be born special. There are no bloodlines here. If you washed up as a new soul, you can apprentice.
Start with reading. Spend a night under the Midnight Moon with an Undine teacher and learn to see the script in water.
Then copying. Trace harbor wards in Cinderhold until your hand aches.
Only then writing. Your first original rune will be small — mending a torn sail, warming cold tea. It will feel enormous.
And that’s the secret Thune keeps from newcomers: magic isn’t about power. It’s about participation. Every rune you write correctly helps hold the haven together.
Thune Da wrote the first draft. We’re all just helping with revisions.
